If you like checking out new and different music then you may want to check Dan’s CD out for yourself. It’s available from the Oh Boy Records homepage for $12.98 and will be available from in March for a couple bucks less. What little I’ve heard so far is just amazing. Everything about this CD is home made by Reeder from the instruments to the computer he recorded them on to the artwork he created for the cover. The simple tunes and solid harmonizing combined with the clever lyrics managed to snag my attention and pique my interest. He writes the songs, sings all the harmonies and manages to pull off what Ken Tucker calls “a kind of parody of the blues and R&B,” a music genre I’m not normally a big fan of. Who is Dan Reeder? Well, yeah, that was my thought too when I first heard the name, but after hearing the small samples of his compositions during Ken’s review I decided that I had to have this CD.ĭan Reeder is a former Californian now living in Germany who is a painter that occasionally dabbles in music. My timing was perfect to catch music critic Ken Tucker’s review of a new CD by Dan Reeder. In a world where most pop culture is about finding out what the maximum number of people desire and then manufacturing something that will max-out that desire till you puke, Reeder’s quiet, sharp-witted, literally home-made music reminds you why some people create: to satisfy themselves, and then, if possible, make some money in the bargain.On the drive home the other day I managed to catch the tail end of Fresh Air on NPR. There’s a certain stubbornness here, and I’m not just talking about the years Reeder says it’s taking for his cappuccino to arrive in Sweetheart’s lead-off cut, “I’m Waiting For My Cappuccino.” Reeder has the stubbornness-the creative persistence-of an artist: You get the definite feeling he’ll do or make whatever he wants and the hell if anyone else likes or wants it. But most of the time, Sweetheart is about the sound of Dan Reeder’s cracked, dry, confiding voice and the pleasant noises he gets out his homemade guitars, his multi-tracked harmonies with himself and his occasional puff on a harmonica. Certain themes recur on Sweetheart: Dan likes to be alone (“I Don’t Really Want To Talk To You” “Just Leave Me Alone Today”) Dan likes to think about, and have, sex (“Pussy Titty” “Pussy Heaven”-for the son of a minister, he’s got quite a mouth on him). It isn’t so much a sequel to his wonderful out-of-nowhere, out-of-time 2003 debut, Dan Reeder, as it is an extension of-a more freewheeling elaboration on-his first musical offering.

Reeder’s second album Sweetheart comprises 15 original songs, plus a cover of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” that sounds like the demo version Gary Brooker probably dreamed of singing before all that baroque production-work got in the way.
